Canadian Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier informed Burmese dissident community leaders that Canadian government is taking tougher measures against Burmese military regime including a investment ban, import and export sanctions, visa ban and assets freeze on Burmese military leaders, their family members, and people connected to them, as well as a ban on Burma-registered and flagged ships coming to Canada.
A meeting between the minister and 20 Burmese dissident leaders including long time Canadian supporters has been taken place today at 9:40 to 10:40 a.m. in Toronto's Burmese Buddhist Temple.
"We are very delighted with today's visit by Hon. Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs," said Zaw Wai Kyaw, President of Burma Buddhist Association of Ontario. He also expressed appreciation of the government's efforts and support to achieve national reconciliation, religious freedom, democracy and human rights for the people of Burma.
"We are pleased to arrange this meeting between the minister Bernier and Burmese representatives," said Tin Maung Htoo, executive Director of Canadian Friends of Burma. "This is indeed an historic moment, not just only the minister meeting with them, but also making an important policy statement."
