Press Release:

Burma Supporters to Walk on u2’s 360 Degree Stage in Vancouver

Canadian Friends of Burma (CFOB) October 28, 2009

VANCOUVER –   A team of committed volunteers comprised of Burmese dissidents and Canadian supporters will march to U2’s famous 360 degree stage at BC Place this evening in Vancouver when U2 frontman Bono performs ‘Walk-On,’ the song attributed to democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

About two dozens of Burma activists gathered yesterday in Vancouver at a Burma Working Group (BWG) meeting where a volunteer team was set up to raise awareness at today’s concert.

BWG meeting that was held the first time in Canada’s West Coast with two key representatives from East Coast Canada – Ms. Mika Leveque and Ms. Rebecca Wolsak – is a network of Canada based-organizations and individuals working on peace, justice, development, human rights and democracy in Burma.

During the two-day concerts in Toronto’s Rogers Centre last month, CFOB mobilized local volunteers to distribute postcards and walk on the stage wearing Suu Kyi masks in front of 62,000 fans.

CFOB launched the postcard campaign in August, coinciding with the 21st anniversary of Burma’s democratic uprising. More than 20,000 postcards have been already distributed across the country – especially during ‘Burma VJ’ screenings in Canadian cities and U2 concerts.

Signed postcards are being sent to the Prime Minister Stephen Harper, urging the Government of Canada to continue the support for the Burmese people with humanitarian aid and a binding UN Security Council resolution.
