Press Release:

Statement by PFOB and CFOB on Suu Kyi's Sentence

PFOB and CFOB condemn sentence of Suu Kyi, calling for a stronger action from Canada
Ottawa, August 11, 2009

Parliamentary Friends of Burma (PFOB) and Canadian Friends of Burma (CFOB) strongly condemn the new sentence to Burmese democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was found guilty of breaking internal security law, for accepting an American who swam into her lakeside residence. She was initially convicted to three years imprisonment which was later reduced to 18 months that could be served in her home, according to a statement made by Home Minister in the courtroom.

“This is an outrageous travesty of justice,” said Hon. Larry Bagnell, Chair of Parliamentary Friends of Burma, adding that “the junta wants to keep her under house arrest in order to manipulate the 2010 election result.”

“Canada must do something new in response to this injustice in Burma since Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is the only female Honourary Citizen of Canada,” said Tin Maung Htoo, Executive Director of Canadian Friends of Burma.

The Canadian Friends of Burma is asking the Government of Canada to review diplomatic relations with Burma by sending its representatives in Ottawa back to Burma for a period of time.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Friends of Burma has already obtained support of more than 70 Canadian Parliamentarians in calling for UNSC’s action on Burma and the formation of a “Commission of Inquiry” on the situation in Burma.
PFOB also called for an international arms embargo on Burma.
