Smashing Barriers: Burma and Beyond

The Race, Religion and Class Report
War, Peace and Justice for All!

Canadian Friends of Burma considers itself a progressive political, pro-democracy, human rights organization. We firmly believe that human rights are universal and that they must be extended to all peoples of the world. Along with this belief in the universiality of human rights, we feel that there are many causes and issues, as well as democracy in Burma, that need urgent attention. We feel that tolerance and understanding of other people's struggles, makes us all stronger, more knowledgable and most importantly, capable of change.

The following pages are our attempt to faciliate discussion and to raise awareness to some tough issues facing all of humanity. We feel that issues such as war, inequality, racism, sexism, fanaticism, and intolerance, which continue to plague the rest of the world, as well as Burma, must be combatted, to achieve a just and equal world. As a truly ideologically driven progressive political organization, we feel that it is absolutely crucial to challenge existing social norms and beliefs, and to question authority in all societies, in order to smash the barriers of oppression and create a viable democratic society.

Similarily, by drawing parallels and facilitating discussion, we feel that valuable lessons can be learned and experience gained, to help tackle many social issues that have long been neglected by Burma's destructive military regime, which eventually must be addressed in a free and democratic Burma. Democracy involves more than just political rights, it includes having a system that is open and tolerant of all people.
